Think you need to be a certified scuba diver to experience the legendary Sardine Run in South Africa?
Think again! Here’s the surprising truth: you don’t need a scuba qualification at all to join in on one of nature’s most thrilling spectacles.
In fact, 99.9% of the action during the Sardine Run happens right at the surface. That’s because the dolphins herd the sardines upwards, forming incredible bait balls that attract a frenzy of gannets diving from the sky, sharks slicing through the water, and even humpback whales swooping in for a feast.
So as long as you’re reasonably fit and comfortable in open water, you’re good to go.
Equipment and Preparation
To maximise your experience:
- Required Gear: Bring your own wetsuit (5–7mm recommended), fins, mask, and snorkel. While 99% of the action occurs at the surface, scuba diving gear is available at the resort if needed.
- Clothing: Pack warm clothing, including a waterproof windbreaker, as mornings and evenings can be chilly.
- Sun Protection: Essential items include a broad-brimmed hat with a clip, reef-friendly sunscreen, and quality sunglasses.
- Fitness Level: A good level of fitness is beneficial due to extended hours on the boat and the physical nature of snorkeling activities.
Safety and Environmental Considerations
Your safety and the well-being of marine life are our top priorities:
- Wildlife Interaction: We operate in the natural habitats of apex predators. It's crucial to respect their space and behaviors.
- Equipment Guidelines: Opt for dark-colored wetsuits and gear to minimize disturbance to marine life. Avoid shiny or bright items.
- Health Precautions: If prone to seasickness, consider non-drowsy medication or wristbands.
Capture the Moment
Don't forget your camera! The Sardine Run offers unparalleled photographic opportunities both above and below the water.
